Tonight I attended a local informational meeting about Team In Training at the Rose Bowl Aquatics Center.   At the event were people interested in finding out more about the various events / training and then many of the local coaches, mentors and honored teammates who will be supporting us.

I am signed up for the Rock & Roll marathon in San Diego on June 5th but I just wanted to attend in any case to meet everyone involved.  I know the training is going to be pretty intense and I’ll need all the support I can get.

A very special part of the evening was when the Honored Teammate was introduced.   An “Honored Teammate” is someone who has had (still has) a blood cancer of some kind and represents a very direct connection with who our fundraising is impacting.  Our Honored Teammate is Virginia Garner who was diagnosed with Chronic myelogenous leukemia in the late 1990’s.   At that time treatment options were limited and the prospects were very grim for surviving more than 3-5 years.   Luckily after about a year Virginia managed to get on the first  clinical trail for a revolutionary new drug which transformed her prospects for recovery.   Virginia’s cancer is now undetectable although she will continue to take the drugs for the disease for the rest of her life (or until a full cure is finally found).  The new treatment was developed through research directly funded by the Leukemia & Lymphoma society.  TAKE THAT CANCER!  BAM!

It was so great to meet you all.  GO TEAM!!
