About YouCanRun.com

So just what is this web site about and why have I created it?

It boils down to this. Over the past two years I have experienced a wonderful transformation in my own health and vitality through running (and other activities) and I want to play my own part in supporting others through the same journey.

So let’s start off with something about me. My name is Liam Kennedy and on Jan 23rd 2011 I will be 48 years old.

Two years ago I weighed over 285lbs and I had Sleep Apnea. I never exercised (and I mean never). Today I am below 230lbs and running 2-3 miles most days. I no longer have Sleep Apnea.

In December of 2009 I started running after not doing so for the prior 27 years.

You remember that equation on how to lose weight that we all KNOW but don’t necessaryily follow?  It is “eat right and exercise more”.  Well my running is that last part of the equation for me.

Over the past two years I have been transforming my body and that started with a process of reducing my weight through managing the food I ate. After I had lost just over 50lbs I started to think I should actually get off my couch and start exercising.

I had to deal with myself over all the reasons I had built up over the years on why I couldn’t exercise.  I had a lot of “reasons”… good ones.   In the end I threw out those reasons and just got to it.

My first step was stumbling across the Couch To 5K training program (I read about it on a friends blog – Run Eat Repeat).  Somehow the irony of that title just appealed to my sense of humor… and I decided to go for it.   The rest is history – so to speak.

Running History:

  1. Started running December 19 of 2009 with the Couch To 5K training plan.
  2. Ran in my first 5K on feb 9th 2010 (the Surf City 5K)…
  3. Coaster 10K run at Knotts Camp Snoopy on April 17th 2010.
  4. The Disneyland Half Marathon = September 5th 2010.

I’ll be posting various articles / stories / links on my site as my own record of what I am dealing with and what I come up against.  It’s going to include the good/bad/ugly (just look at some of my mug shots on the home page for some of that).  I hope my journey will make a difference to you in how you take on your own health and fitness.
